PGY-1 PHARMACY RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Campbell University and Harnett Health System offers a PGY1 program one-year residency to develop knowledge and skills to provide pharmacotherapy for inpatients; Harnett Health System in conjunction with Campbell University is the practice site for an Internal medicine and Family Medicine DO Residency program. Upon completion of the residency program, residents should be able to practice as a pharmacist clinician in the inpatient setting or be eligible for PGY2 positions of their choosing in the inpatient setting. The program will offer 2 PGY1 positions, competitive salary and benefits, as well as a travel stipend to ASHP Midyear and the Research in Education and Practice Symposium.

Upon completion of the program, residents will be competent to:

• Manage and improve the medication-use process.

• Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams

• Exercise leadership and practice management skills

• Demonstrate project management skills.

• Provide medication and practice-related education/training.

• Utilize medical informatics

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Required month long rotations are in the inpatient setting in Central Harnett Hospital (Lillington), Betsy Johnson Hospital (Dunn), and drug information center at Campbell University.

The resident must complete the following rotations:
• Internal Medicine (2 months)
• Administration
• Cardiology
• Infectious Disease
• Project and Medication Use Evaluation

The following rotations are electives:

  • Ambulatory Care
  •  Emergency Medicine
  •  Medication Therapy Management
  •  Information Systems
  • Drug Information
  • Critical Care• Geriatrics

 Practice Site

Harnett Health System is comprised of two hospitals, six physician offices, and seven outpatient centers.
Betsy Johnson Hospital, Dunn, NC – has 101 inpatient beds and services include: emergency services, outpatient surgery, birthing center, pediatrics, diagnostic imaging, physical rehabilitation and cardiac rehab.

Central Harnett Hospital, Lillington, NC – has 50 inpatient beds and services include: emergency services, outpatient surgery, and diagnostic imaging.

Clinical Experience

The pharmacy resident will spend a majority of their time participating in rounding with interprofessional teams comprising of attending physicians, pharmacists, medical residents, medical students, PA students, and pharmacy students. The teams will round at both hospitals. The pharmacy resident will be responsible for providing pharmaceutical care to patients on their respective rotation. In addition, the pharmacy resident will develop and institute new pharmacy initiatives as appropriate.

Teaching

The resident will learn the fundamentals of teaching during a teaching development series. These teaching skills will be applied during the Pharmacy Skills course for first year Doctor of Pharmacy students in didactic and case discussion sessions, as well as in various other courses. The resident assists in precepting 4th year Doctor of Pharmacy students and has opportunities for providing continuing education programs for healthcare practitioners. A teaching certificate will be awarded to residents who complete the teaching development series.

 

Research

The resident will develop and complete at Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) and a yearlong research project. The results of the MUE will be presented at ASHP’s Midyear Meeting. The results of the research project will be presented at the Research in Education and Practice Symposium.

Benefits

The resident will receive a stipend of approximately $44,000, health insurance, a travel allowance to ASHP Midyear and the Research in Education and Practice symposium. The resident is also appointed as a Clinical Instructor of Pharmacy Practice at Campbell University.

Qualifications

Applicants must have graduated from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and be eligible for licensure in North Carolina. U.S. citizenship is required.

Application Process

Interested individuals should complete an application in PhORCAS by January 1. All pharmacy and graduate school transcripts should be included in the application.
We are participants in the ASHP Resident Matching Program. Residents should register for the match with the National Matching Service, Inc. and submit Rank Order List as directed.
